Students will experience a transition from year 6 into year 7 through a curriculum which is based on continuity and progression in the learning process of mathematics. Teachers’ awareness of teaching and learning methods employed in KS2 and that of the KS2 curriculum itself, and implementation of a programme of study which builds on the KS2 curriculum and leads to extension of this will enable a successful transition. The sequencing of the curriculum has been planned to show students an interconnecting web from their previous studies, through KS3 and into KS4.

Students will experience a KS3 curriculum which focuses on depth and not breadth, a curriculum which will support students with gaining deeper understanding of topics and development of declarative and procedural knowledge. The curriculum also aims to enable students to recall and apply key knowledge, through in class low stakes assessments, lagged homework and retrieval practice. A mindset of a ‘one student, one strategy’ approach ensures all students disadvantaged or not have access to a full and ambitious curriculum that is linked to the framework and beyond. Applying a structured and logical approach to problem solving (conditional knowledge) effectively, once students have embedded core concepts, removes the need for initial guesswork from the students but not imagination. This, in turn, will provide students the ability and confidence to access the KS4 curriculum and in being successful in GCSE mathematics.
