English Curriculum Intent Statement

In English, we want to build and develop every student’s character, including all students from disadvantaged backgrounds and those identified with additional SEND, and encourage them to embrace the diverse and competitive world that awaits them, and to confidently and independently overcome their future challenges. With an ambitious and broad curriculum across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4, we will equip all students with the skills they need to express themselves fluently and eloquently.

A wide range of reading and writing experiences will continue to broaden and expand students’ vocabulary and provide an extensive range of opportunities to practise and refine their written and spoken self-expression. The reading and in-depth study of a broad range of texts, will develop all students’ knowledge of the world around them and how society changes, enabling them to make informed and considered responses in different contexts.

Through the social, political and moral issues that have influenced Literature throughout history, all students will develop their thinking critically and challenge themselves to consider their own ethical and moral position on key issues that affect them and the society they live in. We will aim to harness students’ imagination, helping them to refine their spoken and written expression and inspire them to harness their flair, not only to reflect on Literature, but to create it.
