Curriculum Intent Statement – PE
We aim to ensure students experience the joy of learning in PE by fostering friendly competition
that is inclusive to all abilities. Students build their character in PE through opportunities to coach
and lead others, and through experiencing different roles in a team. Students are challenged to use
their imagination in areas such as Dance and Gymnastics, whilst developing their thinking skills
when outwitting opponents.
There is a coherent structure to the programmes of study, allowing sports to be explored in more
depth each year. This helps to refine practical skills and techniques. Students will also expand their
knowledge of different sports in relation to rules and tactics. KS3 is appropriately tailored to
prepare students for our academic and vocational courses, giving students an insight into sports coaching, components of fitness and basic physiology of sport. Students can leave St Helena well-
qualified in this subject area, with a wide range of KS4 courses to choose from.
The core PE curriculum hopes to create lifelong learners, by introducing alternative activities like
Yoga, that students can pursue beyond their time at St Helena. Overall, our curriculum is rigorous in
its approach to developing the right attitudes towards physical activity. Students are taught specific
ways of thinking so they can appreciate physical activity and make the right lifestyle choices.
