Drama Curriculum Intent

At St Helena, we believe that the Performing Arts should be accessible to all. Drama is a powerful tool that develops confidence, critical thinking and creativity. We are proud to offer all of our students the opportunity to engage with both our curriculum and extracurricular activities, regardless of their background.

Drama provides a structured yet imaginative space for students to literally and metaphorically develop their voice. Both our Key Stage 3 and 4 curriculums are designed to have imagination and collaboration at the centre of every lesson. Every scheme of work taught is designed to give every student the opportunity to thrive. Adaptive teaching, scaffolded processes and clear instructions and success criterias in every lesson ensure that PPG and SEND students access the same curriculum and learning as their peers. There is a strong focus on reading and vocabulary in lessons, from script reading to using critical vocabulary when analysing their own work and giving peer feedback.

Our curriculum introduces students to influential practitioners such as Stanislavski, Bertolt Brecht and Frantic Assembly, developing their understanding of how theatre can be devised across different styles, cultures and contexts. By engaging with diverse texts and perspectives, students develop cultural capital and the ability to think critically about the world around them.

At Key Stage 4, we offer the BTEC Level 1-2 in Performing Arts. In this course, students are expected to respond to briefs, develop and refine performance material, and evaluate their own practice and to become reflective thinkers. The qualification fosters project management, problem solving and industry-relevant skills, preparing students for further study, apprenticeships or employment within and beyond the creative industries.

Across all year groups, we aim to develop articulate, empathetic and culturally aware young people who can communicate with clarity, collaborate effectively and approach new challenges with confidence. Our Drama curriculum ensures that students not only achieve, but grow- as performers, thinkers and individuals.
